Reaching for the stars might seem unrealistic to many but if you don’t you are probably selling yourself short
One of the most common things I see in life are people who think too small but complain big. They can’t imagine actually achieving too much so they are happy (kind of) to get by in life and cross bridges when they come to them, if they win the lottery they’ll go on an unimaginative holiday and buy a flash car (apparently)
If you are reading this book I’m making the basic assumption you don’t belong to this crowd but a question I have is do you belong to this one?
In the previous chapter we talked about definition between Dreams, Goals and plans but one thing I missed out was simply the question of is your dream big enough? Are you thinking big enough? I recently put a figure on what I wanted to earn personally a month and shared it with a friend (Definition of a goal) the reaction was astonishment.
“That’s a hell of a lot of money that mate” was the reply. What my friend meant was this.
That monthly income seems ludicrous to me so I just don’t see how you are going to achieve that. What he didn’t know was I was already over half way towards it and had a clear idea of how I would get to the goal (A route map, see later!) My friend is a smart guy, a good business person but doesn’t share the same goals….thats cool but it doesn’t mean I can’t achieve them.
What I see a lot of people do is replace a dream with a wish or a very fuzzy “It would be nice if” type of a statement. This in my mind is a lack of confidence.
In order to achieve big you must think big even if it sounds like being unrealistic. Look at the people who really achieved big in life and ask if it happened by accident or design, ask if they actually are so different from you or if they got a break you couldn’t get? Most the time the answer will be no. Ok if you were born a Rothschild or Rockefeller then yes you had a distinct advantage but mostly the people who live a life less ordinary do so because they think differently to most of the populace.
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
– Harriet Tubman
If your dream or goal is to quit the 9–5 and do something you love then why not take that a little further and Make Your Passion Pay big style, develop the idea into not only the first stages of a plan but be prepared to reach out for what many would see as unachievable because their imagination won’t allow for it. It doesn’t matter what area of interest you have or what the ambition is the only thing that matters is where it can take you and once you step onto that path the journey is what becomes important not just the destination.
